Why Caribbean hotels run out of water, and how to stop it
Most hotels that run out of water have enough storage. What goes wrong is timing: the city supply comes when nobody is watching, the pumps run at the wrong moment, or water quietly leaves through a leak. Here are the usual causes, in the order we see them.
1. City water arrives, and nobody notices
Where the mains supply is intermittent, the cistern only fills for a few hours at a time. If the transfer pumps don't run while it's full, the roof tanks stay low, and the next day starts short. The fix is to know the moment the cistern rises, and to pump when it reaches a set level.
2. The pumps run when the cistern is low
Starting the pumps with too little water in the cistern drains it to the bottom, sucks air, and leaves nothing for the next few hours. Pick a start level (for example 60%) and a stop level (for example 25%), and keep to them. The gap between the two stops the pumps from switching on and off all day.
3. A pump runs dry and fails
A transfer pump that loses its water keeps spinning, heats up and damages its seals within minutes. Then the roof tanks can't be filled at all. A float switch in the cistern, or a switch that measures the pump's power, stops it in time. See how to stop a pump running dry.
4. Leaks nobody can see
A running toilet in one room can waste hundreds of gallons a day. Underground pipes and float valves stuck open waste more. A water meter on the line to the rooms shows it: if water moves at 3 AM when the hotel is asleep, something is leaking. See the night-flow test.
5. Not knowing how much you have
"The cistern is about half full" isn't enough to plan with. Knowing the level in gallons, and how fast it falls per hour on a busy morning, tells you how many hours you have left. Work out what your cistern holds.
What a monitoring system adds
A sensor in each tank, a smart switch on the pumps and a meter on the main lines turn all of the above into numbers on a phone, and into a message when something needs a person. That's what Kanari installs.
