Water storage for hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. A storm can cut both the city supply and the power for days. Water is often the first thing a property runs short of afterwards.
Before the season
- Know how many gallons your tanks hold, and how many your property uses per day. Use the calculator.
- Clean the cistern and check lids and screens, so debris and storm water can't get in.
- Test float switches and pump protection.
- Make sure roof tanks are strapped down.
When a storm is forecast
- Fill every tank to the top while the city supply and power are still on.
- Switch off pumps you won't need, so a power surge can't start them dry.
- Note the levels, so you can track use afterwards.
After the storm
- Check tank levels before guests and staff start using water normally, and ration if needed.
- Inspect pumps and electrics before switching anything back on.
- If city water returns dirty, keep the cistern inlet closed until it runs clear.
Where monitoring helps
With level sensors you can watch the tanks from anywhere, including from off the island. Pumps on a smart switch stay off after a power cut until someone decides to start them. See how Kanari works.
